Review:
Elsby is shy and quiet, and about to spend a few weeks with her great-aunt Verity at her home in Rhode Island. Time apart from her mother, in a place so different from her home in Brooklyn is strange enough - but it all becomes more bizarre when Elsby sees a cat in the garden, a cat walking on two feet, wearing clothes, and carrying a basket of broccoli! Elsby discovers that the neighbors in the house next door are four talking, reading, magical cats and they need her help. Elsby is drawn into a world of talking animals, magical spells, and mysterious ghosts where, along with her new friend Penelope, she discovers not all magic is good magic and tragedy lurks where it is least expected. This was a fun, slightly spooky, but not too scary middle-grade story perfect for animal loving readers who also embrace mystical, magical storylines.
