Review:
Stella's hair is NOT behaving today. It's the day of the Big Star Little Gala, and she needs an amazing hairstyle to shine at the party, but her hair just isn't doing what she wants. Her mother sends her to see each of her beautiful aunties throughout the solar system who all give her their signature style. But which is the right one for Stella?
In this absolutely ADORABLE book with gorgeous illustrations depicting all the different ways women of color can wear their hair, Stella finds out that being yourself is the best way to be. Each character brings a bright splash of color and life to every page, all while helping Stella in her quest. At the end of the book, there is a cute section on each planet's climate and how we might wear our hair if we lived there. The illustrations in this book absolutely shine with color and joy. Girls who see themselves in Stella will definitely pick it up, and kids who love colorful books and space will hopefully do so, too.
This book could be connected to a primary aged unit on space. Kids could imagine what they would look like on each planet- how would they dress and wear their hair to show off their planetary pride. It would also be a fun speculative fiction piece for older kids to write stories based on. Who are these characters living on other planets? How did they get there? Why did they leave Earth?
I just found this book joyful. It made me want to try out some of the hairstyles and read it to my grades 1-3! It was also fun to think about how each planet might shape the people who lived there (if we could!)
