Review:
Louisa June and the Nazis in the Waves is a World War II story from the home front point of view. Louisa’s family lives in coastal Virginia, and all of their lives are being impacted by the war in different ways. Due to their location, her family is specifically impacted by the German u-boats that were sinking ships just off the coast of the United States, and the government’s attempts to cover it up. The story is compelling, the characters are realistic, and the plot moves along at a nice steady clip. I think this is one that could be easily book talked, even to kids who don’t traditionally enjoy historical fiction.
The book ties in nicely with social studies curriculum, especially since it depicts a less talked about part of World War II history. It could tie into units talking about the war effort, propaganda, and life at home during war time.
