Review:
Four Eyes is about a sixth grader named Rex, who is just starting sixth grade, which is his first year of middle school. So far, middle school is not off to a great start. His former friends are now in with a cool (and mean!) crowd, and while Rex knows he does not like these new kids, he desperately wants them to like him - or at least stop making fun of him. There’s a lot going on at home too. Rex’s parents are divorced. He lives with his mom, stepdad, and half brother, and while the house is full of love and support, money is in short supply. His father is wealthy, but rather stingy, and is not the dad Rex needs him to be. Finally, to top it all off, he needs to get the dreaded titular glasses!
This is a great middle grade graphic novel! The illustrations are age appropriate and fun, the story is realistic and interesting, and it’s one of those coveted longer (220 p.) graphic novels that students are always asking me for! I thought they did a great job representing a lower income family with dignity. While I don’t see a second book coming soon, the dust jacket did refer to this as the first in a graphic novel series, so I am hopeful for more!
