Review:
I love this book and highly recommend it to purchase. On an island at the edge of a wide, wild sea, a girl and her grandmother gather gifts from the earth. Salmon from the stream, herring eggs from the ocean, and in the forest, a world of berries. Together, they make salmonberry syrup, cranberry marmalade, huckleberry pie, raspberry scones, etc. The story is told through rhythm, song, and narrative, paired with beautiful watercolor and mixed media illustrations. Throughout the seasons, they sing to the land as they forage, their gratitude and love, and the land sings back. At the back of the book, the author describes her life growing up with her Tlingit grandmother in Sheet'ka, Alaska giving her authentic voice to the story and land.
