Review:
Rewind takes place in Gap Bend, a small town that has a “Time Hop” every year, where they celebrate a year from the past with a fashion show, movies, etc. McKinley is a 12 year old in 2018, who is super excited to participate in the Time Hop celebrating 1993. However, after a fight with her best friend and a fiasco at the fashion show, the most unexpected thing happens and McKinley finds herself actually back in 1993. 1993 is also the year her father and her best friend’s parents were 12, which plays a major role in the plot of the story.
The most interesting thing about this book is how it addressed the impact time travel could have on the future. Because she is the same age as her father during the time travel, she interacts with him and other influential adults in her life. She soon realizes that she has the ability to do things that may change that trajectory of their lives, and eventually her life too. This book would be a great pick for a book club, because of the conversations it could spark on those topics.
I also liked that it is technically a science fiction book, but it feels very accessible to those that don’t usually read science fiction. It reads like realistic fiction and it doesn’t get too deep into the “science” of time travel. I think that, along with the cover, will give this book a wider audience than other time travel stories.
