Would you have the courage of Erin Brockovich to research and expose the truth? What if the ghost of your father was pushing you along?

Review:

Abstract and Mini-Review

At Jeb’s funeral, Van, Jeb’s husband is approached by a stranger. Van’s fears are confirmed. Jeb’s death was directly related to the accident at work. Now Ali and Van, steered by the spirit of Jeb must look into the history of the company and the dumping grounds. This graphic novel is book two of the Witchland trilogy based on Mulligan’s life growing up near the dump site at Hanford, WA part of the WWII Manhatton project where the plutonium was manufactured. Sort of an Erin Brockovich story with a supernatural twist. Since I still struggle with graphic novels, I don’t know that I am the best evaluator. I enjoyed the art and the story definitely had me wanting to know more. Mulligan first took his story to the stage and I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for that as well.

Recommendation Justification

Definitely one of the strongest self/independently published titles that I have reviewed. Engaging story, brilliant art work, and no major editing errors for me to spot.

Uses in the Library/Classroom

Would serve primarily as a choice for independent reading, although I could see students become fascinated with the history/story as I did and have it lead to a research project.

Appropriateness of Artwork

The cover didn’t draw me in as much as the artwork within. The supernatural/ghost elements were especially well done within.
