Review:
Capybara wakes up each and every day determined to be the best friend he can be to the people in his life - all 4,382 of his friends. Whatever they need help with, he is ready to lend a hand. And when a new person comes to town, Sloth, Capybara is determined to make this new acquaintance his 4,383rd friend. He sings a song, he gives gifts, and makes art, but Sloth still doesn't budge. What is Capybara going to do?? I absolutely love this book - I read it for both a pre-k and kindergarten story time and my students thought it was hilarious. I love the message of the story, which is really taking care of yourself before taking care of the others in your life. Capybara runs his energy dry trying to make friends with Sloth, but his friends (including Sloth) show him that they don't need anything from him to be his friend - friendship means having him in their lives. Sloth in this book is a fun character, and the students loved when I read his voice aloud super slow and drawn out. This picture book is a wonderful story time read for elementary kiddos, combining fun words with colorful animal imagery. I also think students would just be interested in picking this book up solely for the fun colorful cover. This book would be a wonderful addition to an elementary library collection, and could even be used in a social-emotional lesson about self care and friendship.
