Review:
Astrid’s father ripped her away from the only life she knew nine years ago. Yes, she was sick and moving from rural and Unden into Stockholm allowed her the treatment and care she needed to truly live with her Crohn’s. But now her grandmother has gone missing – the woman who raised Astrid and taught her everything she knows. Astrid finally convinces her father that they must return to Amma and Unden. Upon returning though, Astrid’s nightmares immediately return. Her nightmares of the Fell King and the other mythological creatures Amma told her of in her bedtime stories. Astrid’s father despised these tales and forbade Astrid of speaking of them once they left. Now that they have returned to Unden, Astrid does not know who or what to believe. Could Amma’s tales be more than bedtime stories for frightening children. Could the Fell King be real? Has Amma been pulled into Tiveden (the haunted forest) to fulfill a sacrifice? Astrid must take on the quest to discover the truth about her Amma, her family, and herself.
Verdict: As a Viking myself, consider me biased, but I loved this title start to finish. A much more high school appropriate dark fantasy to offer younger students looking for A Court of Thorns and Roses or Game of Thrones.
