Review:
Journey around the world to learn about eight of the largest version's of man's master: cats! Join our main character and their mom as they venture to eight parts of the world to draw and study the world's biggest cats. The eight cats featured in this text are: the black panther, the tiger, the snow leopard, the lion, the lynx, the cheetah, the cougar, and the jaguar. Each cat has two pages dedicated to showing it's habitat, fun facts, common prey, noises they make, and tips on drawing them. The main character and their mom are featured on each page respecting the cat's habitats and observing them in their natural lives. In the end, the main character decides that their favorite cat is actually their own, Mr. Fluffles.
As a cat lover myself, I loved this book - and my students loved it too! This book focuses on one of the most beloved house animals, and shares their wild ancestors in a fun and interesting way. The information given is appropriate and able to be understood by elementary audiences. The illustrations are fun and highlight the beauty of these wild cats in their environments. The back of the book has amazing information on other cats in the world, a map notating where each of the eight cats featured can be found, a sizing scale for the eight cats, and tips for staying safe in big cat territories.
I could absolutely see students choosing this book for personal interest, as well as using it as an educational text on animals, habitats, and more! The subject matter, combined with the amazing illustrations of this book, make it a wonderful choice for an elementary school audience.
