Reminder: Statewide Media Literacy Professional Development Coming on May 17

The School Library Systems Association of NY (SLSA) are offering a literacy-focused professional learning opportunity, Media Literacy in NY: Reports from the Field, designed specifically for New York State school librarians and school administrators at various sites across the state on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, 8:30 am-3:00 pm..  Participants will define media literacy and how it integrates into the curriculum. They will develop am understanding of the essential role school librarians play in teaching and supporting media literacy instruction, and learn from NY school librarians (PK-12) who are actively teaching media literacy skills to their students. Participants will be guided through  Project Look Sharp’s Media Decoding Kits to explore pre-made NYS lesson plans focusing on media literacy skills.  A more detailed flyer is attached.  Monroe 2 BOCES will be the site for the Rochester Regional Event.  To register please click here.

 

Teacher on the Trail Workshop

This year, Juli Westrich, a school librarian in West Irondequoit had the amazing opportunity to be the Teacher on the Trail for the 2023 Iditarod! She spent approximately one full month between February and March in Alaska on the Iditarod trail. You can read about her fascinating experience on her blog, but you can also hear from her first-hand in a zoom session with her on March 31^st from 3:45-4:45. 

During this hour, she will tell us about her experiences on the trail, and also explain how this topic can tie into all kinds of curricular topics and make an impact on your students. This event is open to all k-12 educators in the Monroe One region, so please share! Summer Opportunity for Girls in Grades 4-6

NYSCATE, in partnership with the Brighton CSD are excited to offer their Women in Tech - Growing eSTEAM in Girls STEAM camp for students in grades 4 - 6 in the Rochester NY area. Please share with families in your school district.  The camp is interactive and filled with opportunities for learning, engaging, and building confidence!  For more information, see the attached flyer.

Monroe One BOCES will host two sessions of the 2023 NYS Computer Science & Digital Fluency Summer Institute-Grades K-7 (Smart Start)  this summer, June 10-15, and July 31-August 4.

Summer Reading

The New York State Library has updated their Toolkit for Schools & School Libraries on their Promote Your Summer Reading page.  In addition to the Toolkit this page contains a wealth of information about summer reading programs in NYS Public Libraries.  If you haven’t done so yet, reach out to your local public library to learn what is going on in your community libraries this summer.

Student Research Awards

State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa said, “By participating in this invaluable opportunity, our students are learning to uncover, interpret and apply lessons from our past to help them understand trends across time, learn to resolve problems and to nurture and ignite a lifelong quest for learning. This annual research competition not only reinforces the rich history of New York state, but also helps to prepare our young people to expand their personal knowledge base and to advance their understanding of our complex world.”

The Student Research Awards program increases cooperation among schools and organizations with historical records that are useful for education by encouraging students to explore the history held within the repositories of New York State. To be eligible for the awards, students must undertake original historical research using historical records, submit an annotated bibliography, and be nominated by a mentor, who can be an educator, parent, or another adult community member. Projects may be submitted in any format, including video, research paper, or exhibits, and must be submitted by July 1, 2023. Winners will be notified by mid-September and formally announced in October 2023.

These awards are funded by generous contributions from the Chodos Family Fund and other donors to the Archives Partnership Trust, a 501(c)3 organization. The Trust builds education, preservation, and outreach programs not funded by the state, making accessible over 350 years of New York’s colonial and state government records housed in the State Archives. The State Archives is a program of the New York State Education Department.
