Monroe One Library Media Services Contacts.

You have questions, we have answers (hopefully).  Please see the attached M1 SLS Staff Member document to see contact information and areas of expertise/responsibility for our SLS team.

SLS Mini-Grants are back this fall!

SLS Mini-Grants are back this year.  These competitive grants offer an opportunity for school librarians in Monroe One BOCES SLS member schools to apply for up to $1,200 to attend conferences or professional development, carry out an innovative project, or engage in a focused collection development project that benefits the region.  More information and application materials can be found on our LibGuide at https://libguides.monroe.edu/SLS/MiniGrants .

OverDrive/Sora Updates.

The New York Reads Collection, a collaborative effort of the School Library Systems of New York state, is available again this year.  This large collection of eBooks and audio books must be added to a user’s account as you would add another library.  More information, instructions, and a list of titles for 2022-23 is available at NY Reads (scroll toward the bottom of the page).

Upcoming Professional Development.

On October 7, 2022 (Superintendent’s Conference Day for many of you), Monroe One and Monroe 2 BOCES School Library Systems are jointly holding two regional workshops for K-12 school librarians focused on Media Literacy.  The presenters will be experts from Project Look Sharp, a nationally recognized media literacy group based at Ithaca College.  Please see the two flyers that are attached for details.  The Elementary Workshop is generously funded by a Harold Hacker Grant from the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library.  Other Monroe One Library Media Services professional learning opportunities can be found at Library Services and Multimedia. There are also many additional learning opportunities that may be of interest to school librarians offered by the Monroe One’s Model Schools and Professional Learning teams.  You may access these links throughout the year as new opportunities are constantly being added.  We’ll have more information about SLS Winter and Spring opportunities coming soon.

More from Project Look Sharp.

For the past year, the School Library System Association has been working with Project Look Sharp (mentioned above) to develop media literacy resources and lessons for NY school librarians.  The following is a brief update from Chris Sperry, Director of Curriculum and Staff Development at Project Look Sharp and one of our presenters at the October 7 Workshops.  He summarizes the results of that effort to date and shares plans for the partnership and work to continue the coming year:

  • Librarians as Leaders for Media Literacy (ML3) is a partnership between NYS SLSA and Project Look Sharp for teaching Habits of Questioning - all media messages - in diverse subject areas – and at all levels.
  • HOW IS THIS DONE?   Through giving librarians the resources, training, and support to integrate Constructivist Media Decoding (CMD) into your work with students and teachers.
  • Our new CMD Starter Kits include media decoding lessons, demonstration videos, guides and more – for specific levels and subjects – including Library and Information Literacy
  • Sign-Up for the Project Look Sharp email list to receive notices about new free lessons and other resources for school librarians and for you to share with your teachers.

Together we can prepare the next generation with the agency, insight, and habits needed for a civil society. _
