Happy October!

Sadly, we are wishing a fond farewell to another colleague.  Justin McVey, school librarian at French Road Elementary School, in the Brighton Central School District is leaving to pursue new opportunities.  We wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

SLS Mini-Grants

We are looking for two or three volunteers to read and evaluate applications for this year’s SLS Mini-Grants.  The commitment is just a couple of hours of time in early October.  We share the applications electronically and provide instructions and a rubric and tally sheet to help you complete the task.  If a brief meeting is needed, we accomplish that via Zoom.  The only requirement is that you are not applying for a mini-grant.  Please contact Katie Bertrand if you’re interested.

Also, just a quick reminder that SLS Mini-Grant Applications are due on Thursday, October 6, 2022.  For more information, go to https://libguides.monroe.edu/SLS/MiniGrants

Upcoming Professional Development

A list of upcoming Monroe One SLS Professional development opportunities is attached.  There is still time to register for our first offerings, focused on media literacy, taking place on Friday, October 7, 2022.  These two workshops are at the top of the attached list.  We are planning more for the rest of the school year and will update the list as opportunities are added.

In addition to the opportunities listed, I am attaching flyers for several upcoming events that are planned collaboratively by the five School Library Systems in the Rochester Region and/or by one of the other SLSs in the region.

  • Libraries.Today – Fall Symposium, What Do Librarians Really Do?  October 13, 2022,  1-4 pm.  This is offered through an ongoing IMLS Grant secured by the Genessee Valley School Library System.
  • Shake Up Your Shelves, presented collaboratively by the Five (School Library) Systems on Saturday, December 3, 2022, 9 am-4 pm.
  • Redesigning Library Spaces, offered by the Genessee Valley BOCES SLS on March16, 2023 from 8:30 am-3:00 pm.

Last, but not least, our friends and partners at the Rochester Regional Library Council (RRLC) offer many relevant professional development opportunities.  To check their current offerings, go to https://rrlc.org/events/ .  You may register as a member since you are a member of Monroe One BOCES School Library System.  Visit this site often as RRLC is constantly adding events.  Also, RRLC is beginning to work on planning another High School to College Library event soon.  If you are interested in being part of the planning committee, please let Katie Bertrand know, and I will pass along your contact information.

OverDrive Updates

The OverDrive classic interface is reaching end of life at the end of 2022.  If you or your students are accessing OverDrive from a screen that looks like the one to the right, it is now time to update your links to point to Sora at https://soraapp.com, so you and your students can become accustomed to the Sora interface.

OverDrive will again offer a Big Library Read from November 2-16.  The title for this falls event is Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger.   This is a young adult coming of age, magical work tale told in the Lipan Apache storytelling tradition.  It is a 2022 Newberry Honor Book and will be available in both eBook and audio book format with unlimited simultaneous access during the event.  I’ll be sharing promotional materials as soon as they become available.

We will again be offering access to OverDrive’s Magazine Packages this year.  New titles were added to the collections last month and listed below:

  • Juvenile:
    • The Week Junior – Weekly
    • News Bites – Monthly
    • GEOlino (German) – Monthly
    • Britannica – Monthly
    • Sports Illustrated Kids – Bimonthly
    • HorseWyse -Quarterly
    • Smore Magazine -Quarterly
    • Coding for Beginners – One-time
  • Young Adult:
    • Girlworks – Bimonthly
    • Match! – Bi Weekly
    • College Admissions Guide – One-time

We hope you and your students will enjoy these offerings!

Have a wonderful, fun-filled Fall!

Your Monroe One School Library Services Team
